What should I do with my dead microwave oven?

After several months of sputtering, our old microwave finally popped its last popcorn and died. I could have taken it to be repaired, but I figure a repair call would set me back at least $50, and since the oven is probably 20 years old, it might not even be able to be fixed.
I had a bunch of Best Buy coupons, so I purchased a brand-new, much spiffier microwave for $1.79. Yes, that decimal point is correct. I had lots of coupons, and the original price of the new microwave was only $79.00.
What should I do with the old microwave? Wait until bulky item pickup day? Wait until there’s another electronics pickup? Just toss it in the trash? I feel bad for producing this waste, but it made the most economic sense for us.
Right now it’s sitting outside by our garbage cans. It’s rather pathetic.

I think you have to wait for the next electronics or bulk pick up day. If I had known you had a 20 yr old microwave I would have told you to get rid of it earlier. Plus the price of the new one was awfully right. The older models gave off pretty high EMFs (electromagnetic fields). Which I’m not really scared of but still, why have an EMF when you don’t need one. The EMFs dissipated within a few feet, but if you are like many people, you often stand right in front of the microwave oven while waiting the 1 minute for your food. The new ovens have very low emissions. So go ahead and stand there.
I think you should leave out with your trash & wait for pasadena Adjacent to pick it up on one of her weekly trash pickup runs.
Electronic appliances contain hazardous materials and should not be discarded in the regular trash.
If you cannot wait for the special disposal day, you should take it to the Glendale Recycling Center

Ditto what Mini said. Microwaves are electronic waste and must be disposed of properly. There is also a center operated by Los Angeles County at 4600 Colorado Blvd. off the 5 Freeway just south of the 134.
Dog…not even I will stop for a 20 year old microwave. Thanks Mini, I have stuff i need to dispose of that qualifies as electronic waste
The Glendale center may not be the most convenient for Psadena residents.

We do sponsor an annual e-cycling event, but it’s just once a year, usually in the spring. The only other option is to drop it by an e-cycling center or household hazardous waste center.
